10 – Waltzing

Dinner passed pleasantly. The food was as excellent as always and the conversation was entertaining. The Australian passengers who came on board in Fremantle are easy going and make pleasant dinner companions.

Now, we’re in the Captain’s cabin and I’m sitting in my usual place on the sofa looking out at the ocean while the Captain pours me a glass of champagne.

I can’t decide what I want to do first: ask about Jane Scott or tell him about the dancing lesson. He makes the decision for me by setting my glass down on the side table and leaning over to kiss me. It’s a deep kiss, and so long that he loses his balance and falls right over me onto the sofa next to me.

“You’ll be the death of me, sweetheart. I damn near broke my neck.”

He laughs and swoops me up onto his knee. We kiss and cuddle for a while until I remember that I want to know about Jane Scott.

“What do you want to know about her for?” he asks as he unzips the back of my dress and slides it down off my shoulders. “She’s boring and ghastly. What is it your friends call her?”

“Grotesque.”

“That’s just the right word.”

“Well?” I prompt him.

His mood changes in a split second. All serious now he closes the zipper on my dress, and sets me down beside him.

“Difficult to believe I know, but it was Jane Scott who was responsible for the sabotage of the cold room.”

“What? Jane Scott? She wouldn’t know what to do.”

“She didn’t do anything personally. She paid one of the kitchen staff to do the job. And he told one of his friends what he was going to do. I was disappointed enough that one of my staff would do such a thing against the ship, but the fact that his friend knew and didn’t report him before he took action was even worse. The whole episode has quite shaken my trust in my staff.”

“I suppose she did it to get back at you about me even though Clara had made me leave the ship.”

“Yes, we had an unpleasant session in my office when she shouted out, perhaps spewed is a better word, what she thought of you.”

“But, Captain, why hasn’t she been arrested, too?”

The Captain puts his arm around me and gives me a comforting kiss on the forehead. “Think about it, Merry. I would love to have had her thrown in prison. She has cost the company dearly. But the bad publicity would double or treble the harmful effect of the original crime. I decided not to press charges, but to keep her on board the ship and take away all her special social privileges, such as dinner at my table. I assure you that is a terrible punishment for someone like Jane Scott.”

“But Captain, how do you know she won’t try something else?”

“I’ve put someone on duty to watch her every second of the day or night. One of our stewardesses. Jane was quick to see that it was better than the alternative.
